Experienced and Dedicated Leadership

TRISH JOHNSON

President

Living in this beautiful place has been a wonderful experience. It has also taught me that this area is isolated and in a disaster, we will need to rely on our neighbors to survive until outside help can arrive. My experience in the public sector has taught me that when we work to together we can do anything! It is a pleasure to work with such an outstanding group of volunteers who are dedicated to helping us all be as prepared as possible.

When we became Manzanita residents in 2018, our neighborhood cluster leader came by to talk to us about emergency preparedness. This is when we learned about the Emergency Volunteer Corps of Nehalem Bay (EVCNB). We realized how important it was to educate ourselves and to be personally responsible for our own family in case of an emergency.

We signed up to take some educational courses offered by EVCNB. Yellow Radio class taught us how to communicate in an emergency. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) class taught us the importance of having water stored for use during a disaster. The class included instructions for sanitation and proper handling of waste to prevent the spread of disease in a disaster situation.

I quickly became more interested in what we could do to help with emergency preparedness. My involvement in EVCNB is important to me as it not only helps my family, but contributes to the preparedness of our entire community.

As full-time residents of 17 years in this uniquely beautiful area and having made many wonderful friends, we have also become aware of the risk of emergencies. In general the emergencies seem to stem from natural causes. The EVCNB has exceeded expectations in developing and putting in place training and resources for assisting residents and visitors in times of emergency. It is my pleasure and honor to participate with EVCNB in continuing its outstanding contributions.

Having been raised in the beautiful Nehalem Bay area, I have always had a heart for working and volunteering in my home community. My passion has included Pre-Hospital and Acute Care, which is also where my RN professional career always led me. We experience various emergencies in our rural coastal communities, sometimes several times a year. Some are “Normal”, others are more severe and can happen in a heartbeat. Being prepared for an emergency, and knowing what to do when it occurs is very important. I currently have the role of the Nehalem Bay Medical Reserve Corps Coordinator and Shelters Division Lead. Our mission is 1) Preparedness and 2) Response. We have 65 NBMRC volunteers throughout Tillamook County; working with our Partners and being Surge Support is critical. This community cares about our neighbors and each community member. That caring, compassionate and engaged comradery inspires us to advocate for individual and community emergency preparedness and appropriate response plans, thus providing for a resilient community. Please consider joining us – this is a group that makes a difference – and we are stronger together!!

I feel very privileged to reside in the Nehalem Bay area with all of its natural beauty. Over the years, I have seen the force of nature on the coast and the ensuing disruption and danger to life and property. Because we are so isolated, we all need to make provisions for our families and organize our neighborhoods so we can help each other when a natural disaster or emergency occurs. By working together and pooling our resources, we are more likely to survive such an event. My career as an executive in a large corporation has taught me the value of leadership to enable others to get things done. EVCNB is a highly recognized, non-profit organization that provides valuable tools, processes and resources to the Nehalem Bay community for disaster preparedness. I am honored to be a part of this dedicated group of professionals whose mission is to make our community

LINDA KOZLOWSKI

Emergency Response Division Director

In December 2007, our community experienced hurricane-force winds with cold temperatures and snow. All access to the outside world was cut off, and we had a community that cared but with no organized way to help. Within two months of that storm, the Emergency Volunteer Corps was formed. We now have over 300 volunteers trained, organized and ready to help; a community better able to take care of themselves; emergency infrastructure; and three villages working well together and helping each other. It is a joy to be part of this amazing team!

JO COOPER

Director, Emergency Response

From the year 2000 until my retirement from Neahkahnie School District in 2017, part of the science curriculum I taught was emergency preparedness. I took one of the first CERT trainings in Tillamook County; so joining EVCNB was a natural extension of my eagerness to see our community prepared for disasters. "Be Prepared, not Scared" has been my personal mantra and I am happy to be a part of a group spreading that message.

LEE HILTENBRAND

Director, Emergency Response

Our community, being vulnerable to any number of natural or man-made disasters, provides a perfect opportunity to be involved in preparedness activity. EVCNB is a dedicated platform for creating a ready response and helping ensure the safety of the Nehalem Bay area.

MAGGIE POLLOCK

Director, Community Preparedness
Maggie.Pollock@evcnb.org

As a new business owner in Manzanita (and full-time resident on this beautiful coast), I became concerned about how to protect my employees and our customers during an emergency. As a former corporate executive, I spent my career managing large-scale projects and helping companies adopt transformational change. So I understand the importance of working together to develop plans to ensure people are aware, prepared and able to act. The EVCNB and our neighborhood communities have developed exceptional tools and resources to prepare residents for a disaster. I am honored to be part of the EVCNB board to help our business community come together to create a preparedness plan that will protect those who work and visit the shops, restaurants and other establishments in the Nehalem Bay area.
