Steve brings a unique, eye-opening perspective on disaster preparedness. He and his wife Lydia were living in Sri Lanka in 2004 when a massive 9.1 subduction zone earthquake off the coast of Indonesia triggered a devastating tsunami. As aid workers, they witnessed firsthand one of the largest international relief efforts in history — an experience that deeply shaped their lives.

After returning home to Oregon in 2006, Steve learned that the Pacific Northwest faces similar seismic risks. Since then, he's dedicated his life to raising awareness and helping communities get ready. His work includes:

• 10 years with the American Red Cross

• Over 200 earthquake preparedness presentations

• A featured talk at TEDx Portland, the largest TEDx event in the country (watch here)
