October is Fire Prevention Month
Wildfires are now a fact of life in Oregon, and a local fire can be devastating to you and your property. October is Fire Prevention Month, and it’s a great time to make sure you know what to do if you are faced with a wildfire situation.
If county officials order a mandatory evacuation, you will need to leave promptly. However, unlike an earthquake or tsunami disaster, there is a checklist of things to do inside and outside your house so you can leave quickly if fire strikes.
Keep your roof, porch, and gutters free of debris. Make sure flammable materials are not up against your home. Have plywood available to cover vents. Know where your water and gas shutoffs are and how to turn off pilot lights. Know where your ladders are located. Know your evacuation route.
Are your GoBags for people and pets ready? Have you prepared the inside and outside of your house so that firefighters have a good chance of saving your property and possessions?
It only takes a short time to take proactive steps to protect your home. Review and print the checklist here and make sure everyone in your family knows where it is.
